Diocesan Partners
Echo is built on partnerships. One of the hallmarks of the Echo program is its close working relationships with partner dioceses and archdioceses across the United States. These partners join Echo in putting forth the best resources for catechetical ministry, including but not limited to the following: experienced mentor support on-site in parishes and schools, human and financial resources, theological inquiry, and diocesan-provided housing.

Each apprentice and theology teacher works with a mentor at their respective parish or school. The mentor is a full-time and experienced staff person at the parish or school who supports the personal and professional development of the apprentice or theology teacher.

In the parish, as a result of the mentor’s collaborative efforts with other parish staff members, the apprentice, over time, participates in diverse opportunities for serving catechesis in the parish. The mentor’s role in this regard is often referred to as that of a “broker” or “clearinghouse” on behalf of the apprentice.

In the school, the mentor helps to connect the theology teacher with other faculty and staff who can assist the theology teacher in developing the skills and dispositions necessary for an effective faith formation leader within a Catholic school.

Mentors come to Notre Dame for orientation and training and to meet their apprentices and theology teachers before they arrive in the parish or school. Once in the parish or school, apprentices and theology teachers prepare a Learning Covenant outlining their professional goals and meet with mentors on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to discuss their progress toward these goals and any issues that arise in their mid-year and end of year evaluation.
