Dr. Jerry Baumbach, Director Emeritus of the Echo program and Emeritus Faculty in Notre Dame’s Department of Theology, has been identified as one of the most important and influential Christian educators of the 20th century by the Talbot School of Theology’s “Christian Educators of the 20th Century Project” at Biola University.

The Christian Educators Project is a web-based database created to highlight influential Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic Christian/religious education leaders of the 20th century and to make their profiles available to people all over the world who are interested in understanding the development of Christian religious education in North America over the past century. This project covers approximately 160 Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox leaders who have helped shape Christian/religious education since the founding of the Religious Education Association in 1903, and our own Dr. Jerry Baumbach, not surprisingly, has been named among them.

Trace Dr. Baumbach’s compelling personal and professional journey from his youth on Long Island, NY, to his military service in Japan, to parish catechetical ministry in upstate New York, to Publisher at Sadlier, Inc., to Echo and Notre Dame on the southern bend of Indiana’s St. Joseph River. Dr. Baumbach’s profile was written by his colleagues and friends Anne Comeaux and Neil Parent, both distinguished leaders in religious education in their own right, and concludes before his recent retirement from Notre Dame and the birth of his newest granddaughter, Tegan Elena.

As we look back over Dr. Baumbach’s long and deep commitment to religious education over the years and look forward to his continuing contributions in the years to come, the Echo family extends heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to him and his family. “Jerry,” as he is known to his friends and colleagues, is deeply deserving of this high recognition for his singular contributions to the field of Christian education and for his lesser known, but no less profound, contributions to the faith lives of each of us blessed to know him. We invite everyone to join the Echo community in celebrating our mentor, colleague, professor, and friend, Dr. Jerry Baumbach, and his remarkable achievement!
